Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
