Meteorological Balloons Used to Smuggle Tobacco Products Closed Lithuanian Airport

Recovered contraband balloons
A minimum of 11 of the meteorological balloons, carrying 18,000 packs of contraband cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.

Air Travel Interruptions

The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.

Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.

At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."

To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.

Cross-Border Effects

Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.

Smuggling Techniques

In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."

International Concerns

These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.

Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
