Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
